CancerScan kicks off to advance personalised cancer treatment in Europe
The CancerScan kick-off meeting successfully took place on the 16th of September 2025, bringing together the project partners to officially launch the three-year initiative. During the meeting, partners outlined their expertise and presented their planned contributions to the work packages. The agenda also included discussions on research objectives, methodology, and engagement with stakeholders.
The project
The CancerScan project aims to revolutionise personalised cancer medicine by combining tumour organoids, multi-omics data, and advanced artificial intelligence to create digital twins of tumours. These digital models will enable the prediction of tumour responses to drug treatments, supporting clinicians in tailoring therapies to individual patients.
The project will develop a smart digital scanning device, a knowledge graph of tumour microenvironment interactions, and a simulation framework merging experimental and clinical data. By pursuing these objectives, CancerScan seeks to enhance diagnostic accuracy, optimise treatment strategies, and accelerate the adoption of AI-driven personalised oncology across Europe.
The consortium
The CancerScan consortium brings together seven partners from five countries: Spain, Portugal, Italy, Germany, and Serbia. The partners represent hospitals, universities, research centres, and SMEs. Together, they combine expertise in oncology, tumour biology, medical imaging, multi-omics analysis, biomedical ontologies, artificial intelligence, hardware/software acceleration, and innovation management.
The consortium includes the Spanish National Research Council (Coordinator), Institute of Advanced Chemistry of Catalonia, FCiências.ID – Associação para a Investigação e Desenvolvimento de Ciências, Politecnico Milano, Bielefeld University, Vall d’Hebron Research Institute, MINDS & SPARKS GmbH, and Neovivum Technologies.
